First best is falling in love. Second best is being in love. Least best is falling out of love. But any of it is better than never having been in love.

1. Wed only been seeing each other for two weeks when she got into a really bad car accident. She was in the hospital for a whole weekend, she woke up and barely remembered who I was. So I did something really crazy. I printed off and gave her an envelope full of all our texts and the receipts for the first date. The memories came back to her and I realized I could never lose her.

2. I was dating his best friend and we were pretty unhappy, and I was going through my friends texts to see if she had been texting her ex when I saw texts from him, saying that he was in love with me and couldnt help it. I know its messed up because I was with his friend, but in that moment I knew I was stupid, head over heels in love with him too.

-Christina

3. I watched her hold her little brother while he cried because he was too little to understand that their mom was coming back. Shed never looked more beautiful, I felt in that moment that she was the best person Id ever know.

-Chris

4. I went to Philly and saw a mural street art tour where you travel on a train line and all the murals look like they were written by someone trying to tell a train passenger that they love them, its called A Love Letter For You. Every single one felt like it was about him, like listening to a song on a loop.

5. We were walking my roommates dog and the sun was going down, it was fall. She looked at me just as the brightest ray hit her eyes, which are normally a very standard brown, but in that split second they were the brightest gold, and I just wanted to tell her I was in love.

-Joseph, 24

The next morning, he had breakfast and ibuprofen on deck. If that ain't love, then I dont know what love is.

(Apparently guys use lesbian dating apps to meet girls?) And I just laughed so hard at that. It really broke the ice. I dont know, I think, looking back after 2 years together, I must have known I loved her then.

-Kim

11. I saw him dancing at the bar, like rubbing up against one of my friends, in a really silly way. We were all out together and he was laying it on thick to get my friends to like him. He looked so stupid.

13. I knew I loved him when I asked him for a cigarette outside of a bar and he took out a pack of Marlboro reds, my brand.

-Kate

14. I knew I was in love the first time I saw him cry in front of me. We were in a long distance relationship, I was dropping him off at the airport after our first week together. We had spent short times together on either side of the country, but this was the first time we had spent a significant period of time together. It was raining outside and I noticed his eyes well up as I pulled up near the airport. We embraced and it took everything I had to let go. I knew leaving me was so hard for him because he hadnt cried in years; hes not the type to be vulnerable. I wanted to make sure we never had to say goodbye like that again. Its been 4 years and theres no longer a 5 hour plane ride separating us, every time I look at him I feel just as loved as I did in that moment.

-Melissa

15. My boyfriend and I had been together about 3 months when I realized I loved him. It hit me out of nowhere, actually. I really wasnt sure if him and I were going to get to that point. One night, we were driving back to his apartment and we got off the freeway and there was this young woman crying frantically on the side of the road and so he told me to pull over and he jumped out of the car and helped this woman, who had apparently lost her cat. He got back in the car after that and I looked at him like he was a completely different person. Yeah, that was 5 years ago. Still in love.

-Rose

16. She followed me into the bathroom at the bar just to make out with me. How could I not fall in love with her?

-Owen

17. He met my parents and I hadnt come out (as gay) yet. He was angry with me for not having come out and I thought the meeting would go horribly wrong. When my parents asked him how he knew me, he immediately answered by saying (Continued)

Im his girlfriends best friend! They loved him. I came out the next day.

-Sam

18. He fell on his butt in front of me and huge group of people, it was snowing. I went to help him up and he pulled me down with him and said its not so bad down here with a pretty girl. So cheesy, so perfect.

-Sarah

19. I know this is the cheesiest thing ever and I never thought this kind of stuff happens until it happened to me. I knew I loved her the moment I saw her. It was instant. I was completely mesmerized by her. Then, she laughed at something her friend said, and I was like, this is it for me. I need to know this woman immediately. Thankfully, she fell in love with me, too.

-Kwesi

20. Woke up from a dream where she didnt exist, that was the whole dream. Wed only been dating for a few weeks, but I had this dream where I couldnt find her and I woke up sweating. I felt like I knew what love felt like, the feeling that you couldnt possibly lose that person.

-Brendan

-Kyle

22. Ive been in love before but Im not sure if there was ever a specific moment where I just knew. I think love sort of happens slowly, then all at once. Its like the person is there, theyve always been there, but you start noticing little details about them the way they laugh when they think something is really funny, how they look in the morning when theyre tired and quiet, the small noises they make when theyre getting comfortable all of these things theyve been doing for years they dont even realize they do anymore but are completely unique to them and new to you. Each moment of discovery increases just how endearing you find them until it builds up and builds up and then you have no choice but to blurt out I LOVE YOU! when doing something totally mundane together like shopping for glassware at Target or standing in line at a concert.

-Jeanne

23. "We had just gotten back from a crazy night in the city (a night where I continually turned him down so he tackled me onto the bed and we cuddled all night) I was cleaning my apartment and it got really quiet I said his name, and he said "what?" I asked what he was doing and he said he was (Continued)

making himself look pretty, (he's a pretty large guy huge arms and hands really burly) he walked out of my room wearing mascara and listening to Taylor Swift. My heart swelled, and kissed him I couldn't help but fall in love with that sweet burly soft hearted man."

-Miriamjamess

24. "We had been dating about a month, and I was home visiting my family for the holidays. We were talking on the phone for about an hour, and he laughed at something I said and replied, "oh my god, I love you." He said it in such a joking way though, and it was early in our relationship, so I pretended I didn't hear, but I realized I was in love. When he picked me up from the airport, I asked him: "Did you mean what you said?" He told me it was a slip of the tongue, but yes, he did. Been together ever since."

-Becca

25. "It was only about a week after we met, and we finally exchanged numbers. The first thing he ever messaged me was "Dork here, reporting for duty" because I had playfully called him a dork a couple times before. I was a goner. I didn't fall in love with him at that moment, but it was definitely the moment where I just KNEW he was special and I had to keep seeing him. That was two years ago and every time I look at him it's like the first time. Seriously."

-bc94

26. "We were young, we had just gotten done sneaking out and having a midnight hike and smoke. We snuck into bed and were just talking and playing with each other's hair and what not. It dawned on me that I've never cared about someone to this extent. 9 years later and still strong."

-opheliaks

27. "Our entire relationship as friends made me realize it. As someone who deals with depression, the more I thought about it, she was the one always there for me. When she was screwed over by a guy she came to me first before any of her girlfriends, and vice-versa when I was done wrong by a girl. One day we got in to a huge fight and we almost completely stopped being friends because of how angry we were at each other, and in those few hours that we spent "not talking to each other ever again" I realized that (Continued)

I have been hopeless let in love with her, we just passed the two year mark a few days ago! I can't speak on our future because we're both still very young but I can see us making it a long time."

-JoseTheBosse

28. "I don't think there was a incredible or overwhelming moment in which I knew he was the one. For me, I felt peaceful when I was with him. I didn't feel like I had to put on a show or pretend and it was incredibly easy to be drama free. We never fought over stupid stuff and was just easy to be with him. I did the best I could and he made a point to say he appreciated it and I did the same for him. We always had respect for each other and always had open honest communication. And that's how I knew :) now, we continue to do those things for each other and it really helps to get us through the rocky times."

-Fromheretotherewu

29. "We had a big argument. I mean like a cursing-and-calling-pure-raw-emotion argument. And I got really angry. And I realized that even while angry with her, I couldn't imagine life without her. And if I could be that angry with her and still want to have her in my life then it must be meant to be.

It's now over 10 years later and we're coming up on our 10 year anniversary. It hasn't always been easy, but we love and would do anything for each other."

Racism is an insidious, and unfortunately prevalent, force in all of our daily lives. Maybe we're on the receiving end of it, being treated differently and losing opportunities because of others' preconceived notions.

Or maybe we're on the other side of things. Even those who aren't actively racist or discriminatory still have to process the world through the filters of the things they've been told about people who are different.
