Strange Facts About The Show Stranger Things.
Recently finished Stranger Things season two? Looking for more? Well look no further, my friend, because we've got bizarre facts, behind-the-scenes stories, and easter eggs. Be warned: these fun facts definitely contain spoilers.
In an interview with Vulture on August 22, 2017, the Duffer brothers, (who created Stranger Things), confirmed that the show has been renewed for a third season, ahead of the premiere for the highly anticipated debut of season two on October 27th. They also revealed their plans to renew the show for a fourth season as well, when they said, "We're thinking it will be a four-season thing and then out." So, you can expect to see another two rounds, but it might be bye-bye after that.
In another interview with the Duffer brothers, on NPR, they praised Millie Bobby Brown, (Eleven), as a "precociously gifted actor", and said that she has the ability to adjust her performance to different lenses or camera positions, in a way that most child actors can't do. Conversely, they also said that there were times on set when they were reminded that she is a young girl. Ross Duffer gave an example, when he said, "One day she showed up on set and she [was] just covered head to toe in glitter. And she's like, 'I don't know where this glitter came from.' And it's like I'm not having this problem with any of my adult actors. David Harbour is not coming in covered in glitter." The Duffers stated that removing the glitter delayed their shooting schedule by 45 minutes.
Eleven's outfit of the pink dress and blonde wig are similar, and possibly a nod to, E.T.'s disguise in the movie "E.T.: Extra Terrestrial".
The character of Billy was originally how the Duffer brothers had envisioned Steve would be, but Joe Keery (Steve)'s influence dramatically changed how the character played out. After Steve's redemption at the end of season one, the Duffer brothers still wanted to bring in a human villain, so they created Billy.
Chief Hopper's trailer reportedly only cost the art department $1 to buy.
On Spotify, when you listen to the Stranger Things theme song, the album cover page turns upside down, and the time bar turns into a flashlight pointing at the album cover.
Natalia Dyer (Nancy) and Charlie Heaton (Jonathan) are actually dating in real life. This was official as of October 2017.
When Winona Ryder (Joyce) was approached to do Stranger Things, she was still living in a bit of a dark age. She admitted that she was a late bloomer when it came to technology and electronic devices, and she didn't was streaming was.
In Stranger Things, Winona Ryder portrays a mother whose child has gone missing. In real life, Ryder dedicated the film Little Women to Polly Hannah Klaas, a young girl from Ryder's hometown of Petaluma, California, who went missing and was later revealed to have been kidnapped and murdered. Ryder offered a $200,000 for anyone who had information on the case, and remains a strong supporter of the Polly Klaas Foundation for Prevention of child abduction, and aid in the search.
There are many hat tips to Stephen King throughout Stranger Things. In the scene where we see the state trooper guarding the morgue in season one, he is reading Cujo, by King.
In the second season, there are even more homages to Stephen King. The character of Billy, played by Dacre Montgomery, was heavily influenced by the character of Randall Flagg, who has appeared in at least nine of King's novels. Common attributes include long wavy hair, an earring, and dressed head to toe in denim. So, for readers of King, the physical appearance of Billy would have hinted at how villainous the character really was.
Finally, of the many nods to Stephen King in this series, Episode 4, "The Body", contains perhaps the most obvious parallel. The kids travel a significant stretch along the railroad tracks. Much of the story in the film "Stand By Me", and in the novella it is based on, titled "The Body", involves kids traveling along railroad tracks.
The twin actresses that play Holly Wheeler also played the original baby Judith in Season 4 of Predator. Additionally, the first character killed onscreen in "Predator" was named Hawkins, and Stranger Things takes place in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana.
Even if you're a fan of the 1993 film Hocus Pocus, you may have missed this one... In the beginning of season 2, Dustin and Lucas are talking to Max about how she's from California and that she likes skateboards. They make a joke and throw around the word "tubular". Sound familiar? This joke also appeared in the 1993 film Hocus Pocus, when the bullies are messing with a character, who is also named Max. They are discussing his recent move from California and call it "tubular".
The original score for Stranger Things is electronic, and very influenced by Tangerine Dream. However, actual Tangerine Dream track excerpts can be heard over some scenes. At least one track from their album Green Desert was used in the pool scene at the party in season one.
Millie Bobby Brown, who plays Eleven, is very close friends with Noah Schnapp, who plays Will, in real life. In an interview, Brown said she is a big supporter of Joyce and Hopper ending up together, because that means she will able to work with Schnapp more.
Matthew Modine, who plays Dr. Brenner in the show, stated in an interview that his character was written as wearing a plaid shirt and jeans. Instead, Modine worked closely with the Duffer brothers to craft the character's look. They patterned his hair after Robert Shaw in Battle of the Bulge, and his pristine suit after Cary Grant's wardrobe in North by Northwest.
The repeated shots of the Byers' home with the porch swing in the foreground is an homage to The Evil Dead. You can also spot a poster for The Evil Dead is also seen in Jonathan Byers' bedroom.
Matt Duffer said Bobs death scene was the hardest scene they had to write. They didnt want to kill Bob off, and Sean didnt want to leave the show, but the brothers felt that, narratively, it was the right thing to do.
The heart-warming storyline between Steve and Dustin wasnt in the original Season 2 pitch. It came about organically during the writing process. Steve had broken up with Nancy, and so didnt have anyone to spend time with, and Dustin was also being a little sidelined, so the scriptwriters brought the two characters together.
After Eleven and Mike, and Max and Lucas kissed, the entire cast and crew applauded them. Millie Bobby Brown said she found it incredibly embarrassing, and the reaction made it so much worse to film.
Though Eleven and Mike have a reunion in the last episode, it was originally supposed to be at the Snow Ball. Instead, the Duffer Brothers decided to move their meeting forward, with the iconic scene where Eleven destroys a pack of demodogs, and blasts into the Byers house, rocking her new look.
Gaten Matarazzo (Dustin)'s voice had changed so much by the time production ended, that the sound team couldn't use him for any additional dialogue recording.
In season one, the per-episode budget was around 6 million dollars. However, when season two was announced, Netflix increased the budget to 8 million dollars. This is only 2 million dollars less than the budget of Game of Thrones which shoots at 10 million per episode.
Gaten Matarazzo turned out to be incredible at improv, so the team let him ad lib in a lot of his funny scenes.
The Upside Down was originally called the Nether. But people made jokes about nether regions and the brothers changed its name.
The writers of the series toyed with the idea of each series of Stranger Things being a fresh story set in a different decade finishing with a series about 2020, released in 2020. But they loved the Season 1 characters too much to abandon them. We're glad they did!
