The world is full of double standards that complicate the lives of men and women alike, but the ones that don't explicitly rely on gender expectations are equally annoying, as we learned when Redditor PunchBeard asked: "What are some "Double Standards" that don't involve gender?"
"I always find it amusing..."
I always find it amusing that when I purchase chemicals for my company, I can order some real crazy sh!t, or stuff that can be used to do/make/synthesize crazy sh!t, without raising an eyebrow or having to submit documentation or business records because hey, we've got an account so it must be legit.
But when I order good old 99.9% ethanol, which is really cheap for us because it's tax-exempt since we're using it for industrial purposes rather than drinking it for entertainment, there's a mountain of additional paperwork attesting to the above.
"When I went to Japan..."
When I went to Japan, I was heckled by my friends if I went and had American food. Yet, when the same groups of friends went out with Japanese guests here in the States, we ALWAYS only went out to Japanese food. WTF?
"I have lots of experience..."
I have lots of experience (like they are asking) but the employer thinks I'm too old for the job.
"My parents say..."
My parents say that our generation only does stuff so that we can take a picture and post it, and then whenever we go do something, my parents take a ton of pictures so that they can post them.
"Employers who expect you..."
Employers who expect you to stay late for hours of overtime on their whim but get mad if you're even 5 minutes late in the morning. If I'm flexible for them I think its fair to be flexible for me. Such a nit-picky thing to destroy morale when its already so bad from being forced to work late! Luckily that was my old job and I'm in a better place now.
"Cities and states..."
Cities and states telling us to conserve water by watering less. Some people comply and they end up getting fined by their city for having a dead or dying lawn. City and state buildings have the greenest lawns around because they water round the clock. Early morning, high noon, and in the evening. Half the sprinklers are usually over spraying in the middle of road.
"Anyone else overdoses..."
Celebrity overdoses: Such a tragedy. Addiction is a disease.
Anyone else overdoses: f*cking junkie, what did they expect would happen?
"No one cares..."
No one cares if you are reading a book/newspaper and not talking to anyone. Do the same thing on your phone though...
I'm generally expected to give 2 weeks notice if I'm going to be quitting a job. However, if said job wants to get rid of me, they can do it with absolutely no notice, and often with a bullsh*t reason.
"If I finish..."
If I finish a 9-5 and want a glass of wine after work to relax, that's perfectly normal.
If I'm working a night shift and want a glass of wine after work to relax, I must have a drinking problem because it's 8am and I'm opening a bottle of rosé.
"It wasn't me!"
There's not much you can do when the righteous fist of the law comes down on you. Call it a mix-up, or call it a mistake, if someone's pegged you at the scene of a crime there's not much you can do but trust the justice system to prove you innocent. However, that's a gamble, and just because you've been given a "not guilty" doesn't mean the effects won't follow you for the rest of your life.
Reddit user, u/danbrownskin, wanted to hear about the times when it wasn't you, seriously, it was someone else, when they asked:
